Karma, The Law of Return, And The Three-fold Law

Do I believe in Karma?

First of all if you ask 10 people what Karma exactly is, you most likely get 10 different answers. Karma to a Wiccan might mean a concept of The Three-Fold Law, which states that energy you give out will return to you in three – meaning if you put a “negative” spell upon someone you will receive three times the negativity.

Karma to a Hindu might mean something completely different. They could be revering to the following types of Karma:

Three types of karma:

  1. Prarabdha karma – karma experienced during the present lifetime
  2. Sancita karma – the store of karma that has not yet reached fruition
  3. Agamin or sanciyama karma – karma sown in the present life that will come to fruition in a future life

Buddhism and Jainism also include the concept of Karma within their religious path, but again the meaning is fluid. They could be revering to this concept:

Karma Niyama – order of act and result, e.g., desirable and undesirable acts produce corresponding good and bad results.

Which brings me back to the original question – do I believe in Karma?

I believe in the order of act and result, which to me is the definition of Law of Return. The Law of Return states that whatever energy and focus I put out, I will receive back. At the same time I do not believe in a judgmental Universe, that makes the decision if a act is positive or negative. It is our own perception of the Universe from a human perspective that makes an act positive or negative. Judgment is an entirely human emotion and a human choice.

Therefore I do not believe in positive or negative Karma, but rather a giving and receiving of focus which creates expansion, a non-judgmental expansion. Law of Return is essentially the same as Law of Attraction as it brings what you focus on – the Law of Return rather specifically deals with the action aspect of return, rather then the emotional aspect of it, as LOA does.

But again, I am not a practicing Wiccan, I personally practice an eclectic mix of Paganism, and I am practicing Witch.

Hail Hecate!
